Dear Friends of Harbor House,
Wishing you joy in this month of Valentine’s Day with all of its red, pink, and talk of love. I am reminded of Mother Teresa’s words with great concern amidst her work with the poorest about the loneliness in the world that affects so many: “The greatest disease in the West today is not leprosy; it is being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for…There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread but there are many more dying for a little love.” Our staff at Harbor House sees this often in the work we do. So many of our local poor, particularly the elderly, look forward to our services so they can connect with others. Sometimes just a kind voice, a simple “Hello, how are you today?” can mean the world to a person who spends so much time alone. The psychoanalyst Erich Fromm said that we expend too much energy on “falling in love” and need to learn more about how to “stand in love.” We are grateful for every dollar, every volunteer hour, and every kind word you offer to those we serve. May your February be filled with love and may we stand in love, Denise Cortes Founder/Director Harbor House dcortes@harborhouseto.org Comments are closed.
